The Hush (or Silence) button is an essential safety feature mandated by modern smoke alarm standards to prevent occupants from disconnecting alarms during cooking false alarms.
How the Hush Feature Operates Internally
When you press the Hush button, the microprocessor shifts its optical or ionization trigger threshold upward. The horn silences, and the red LED typically flashes once every 8 to 10 seconds to indicate the unit is in temporary desensitization mode:
- Automatic Timer: After approximately 8 to 10 minutes, the internal timer expires, and the alarm automatically returns to full standard sensitivity.
- Safety Smoke Override: If smoke density increases significantly during the hush cycle (indicating an escalating real fire), the safety override feature triggers full the manufacturer-specified alarm/test signal sirens immediately.
What to Do if the Hush Button Does Not Silence the Alarm
- Identify the Originating Alarm: In an interconnected hardwired network, pressing Hush on a non-initiating alarm will not silence the network. You must press Hush on the specific alarm that detected the smoke (identified by the fast-flashing red LED).
- Dense Smoke Saturation: If smoke is too thick, the emergency safety override prevents silencing. Clear the air around the unit with a cardboard piece or open windows.
