How to Reset Kidde Smoke Alarms

1. Hardwired 120V Kidde Models (15-Second Capacitor Drain)

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker powering the smoke alarm circuit.
  2. Rotate the Kidde alarm counter-clockwise to detach it from the ceiling mounting ring.
  3. Squeeze the side locking tabs on the 3-pin wiring plug and pull the connector straight out.
  4. Open the battery compartment door and remove the 9V or AA batteries.
  5. Press and hold the Test/Hush button firmly for a full 15 seconds to drain residual charge from internal capacitors.
  6. Install verified brand-new batteries, reconnect the 3-pin wire plug, mount the unit, and restore circuit breaker power.

2. Kidde Smart Detect Models (8 to 12 Second Button Hold)

For Kidde Smart devices (Smart Smoke + CO, Smoke + IAQ), press and hold the center control button for 8 to 12 seconds until the unit announces or flashes its reset confirmation. Release the button immediately when prompted to avoid entering factory network de-registration.

3. High Humidity & Steam Nuisance Triggers

Ambient humidity above 85% RH or steam from adjacent bathrooms causes moisture condensation inside Kidde optical sensing chambers. If steam triggers false alarms, relocate alarms at least 3 feet (0.9 meters) away from bathroom doors containing showers or tubs.
