Regular testing ensures carbon monoxide detectors will sound during a heating failure or flue gas leak. Understanding safe testing methods prevents sensor damage.
Step-by-Step Testing Procedure
- Electronic Button Test: Press and hold the Test button on the face of the detector. After 2 to 5 seconds, the unit should sound two full cycles of Some CO alarms use four rapid beeps followed by a pause for an alarm condition, but the exact pattern is model-specific. Check the alarm’s manual. (Temporal 4 cadence) and flash its red LED.
- Digital Display Verification: On models with digital screens, the display will illuminate and show a self-test number sequence (often "888" or "0") to verify all LCD segments.
- Peak Level Check: Many digital CO alarms have a "Peak Level" memory button that displays the highest PPM concentration recorded since the last reset. Verify this reads 0 PPM under normal conditions.
